Guide to Edmonton, Alberta

Overview

The capital of Alberta in Canada, the city of Edmonton is the center of education, culture, and government in the state. The city goes by many nicknames although the favorites are “City of Champions” and “The Festival City”. The latter name is due to the fact that the city hosts a variety of world class festivals all throughout the year. The city was incorporated as a town in 1892 and then as city in 1904. The oil and gas industry is a major contributor to the economy of the city but other diverse sources also contribute to it, including technology, research, retail and tourism.

Neighborhoods

The neighborhoods of Edmonton are distinct from each other, offering tourists varied destinations to choose from should they decide to explore the entire city. The central business district of the city is set within the downtown area along with several other important neighborhoods, including the Government Precinct, Warehouse District and Arts District. If travelers wish to take photos of grand French-Canadian inspired residences, then they should head to Garneau, where they can also enjoy delicious foods at the independent cafes. Those who wish to visit Chinatown and Little Italy can go to McCauley where they could also find other ethnic sections. Mill Creek, on the other hand, is known for allowing opportunities for cross-country skiing, hiking or biking.

Exploring the City

Start the exploration at the central part of the city where the oldest structures and many historic sites can be found. This is also where the old mansions and modern skyscrapers are located just a stone’s throw away from each other. Tourists often head to Whyte Avenue in South Central for entertainment while the popular shopping destinations are set in West End. It is easy for one to get lost in this sprawling city–good thing that the streets are easily navigable on foot or by vehicles as these streets lie on grids in most parts. Also, the public transport system is quite cheap and is very safe so that exploring the city is very easy.

Things to Do

The Art Gallery of Alberta is one of the most amazing examples of the superb architecture in Edmonton. It is also a great destination for checking out wonderful art exhibits. Another great option is the Royal Alberta Museum as well as the Telus World of Science which also houses an observatory and planetarium. Families traveling with kids will surely have fun at the Edmonton Valley Zoo or Elk Island National Park of Canada. Enjoy tracing history in the living history museum of Fort Edmonton Park, the largest in Canada or check out the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village.

Best Dining Spots

Earl’s and Boston Pizza were both born in Edmonton. It is but natural that travelers to the city should try dining in these two pizzerias at least once in their trip. Those who love Chinese foods will adore the many cheap yet delicious options being offered in the city, especially those in WokBox. As diverse as the neighborhoods in the city are, the restaurant options also offer varied menus. Thai restaurants are quite popular though the Italian restaurants are probably the most popular of all, with options like Fiore Cantina and Sicilian Kitchen. For healthy cuisine, diners should head to HealthFare.
