This suburban community is famed for having successful trade union organizing in its industries during the late 1800s. The well-known community organizer Mary Harris Jones, or more commonly known as Mother Jones spent some of her significant time in Cottondale conducting studies about communities and workers in the early 1900s. Now known to visitors and tourists as a place for relaxing and unwinding that still exudes the city lifestyle, Cottondale entertains newcomers with its plethora of lined up activities, entertainment, and good cooking.

The Wall Skate Park Incorporated found on McGee Road is a provider of amusement and recreational activities for all the members of the family. For exciting and adrenaline rushing adventure, the Splatzone Paintball field on Avalon Drive has five playing fields suited for younger children. The typical nightlife in Cottondale is greatly anchored to the neighboring Tuscaloosa’s vibrance. Most of Cottondale’s residents and visitors head here for its state-of-the-art movie houses and bars. Guests can enjoy the latest premiers of movies at the Cobb Hollywood 16 and IMAX on Old Greensboro Road and at the Bama Theatre along Greensboro Avenue. Cottondale has its own line-up of dining places to offer to hungry stomachs. The city’s pride, Southland Restaurant on Highway 11 is a favorite of many and is a crowd pleaser for its servings of authentic Southern specialties of steaks and burgers that are perfectly paired with their excellent wait staff service. Nestled on Buttermilk Road is Arby’s. Definitely known by many, this place truly satisfies everyone’s cravings for Angus steak, roast beef sandwiches, submarine sandwiches, shakes, and desserts. Found along Recreation Area Road is the home of the finest seafood in the community. The Eagle Cove Marina and Restaurant grants diners’ appetite for oyster, squid, and catfish. Other notable places to dine while in Cottondale include Lite Choice on McGee Road, Cinco de Mayo along University Boulevard, and Garden of Eatin’ on Buttermilk Road.
