Dothan is a thriving city that lies in Alabama, USA. It is the seat of the Houston County. It acclaims itself as the Peanut Capital of the World as it produces almost 65% of the peanuts in the country which is exported to different parts of the world. This town in southeastern part of the state is bustling as aside from rich history, it offers lots of tourist attractions that draw in millions of visitors every year along with conveniences. No matter how long you plan to stay in the city, your heart will certainly be drawn.
Hit the downtown and be amazed at 20 murals that reflect the Wiregrass history and 60 4-foot tall peanut statues that clearly echo the city’s industry. Visit Dothan Botanical Gardens if you want to see some greens. It houses a nature trail that roves through a lush garden and sparkling pond. Make a stop at Shute Pecan Company for a tour in their lab where different kinds of nuts are processed. You can even have some treats with provided product samples. There are also bunches of museums in the area that will surely enrich your understanding of the city.
The Peanut Monument is one of the most visited attractions in the city. The giant sculpture is made of gold and stands high, proclaiming to the world that Dothan is truly the peanut capital. Of course, Dr. George Washington Carver Monument should not be missed. The city pays tribute to the man who discovered over 300 uses of peanut through making a life-size statue of him. Porter Hardware is no longer simply a store that caters to people but a tourist spot as well. The historic building built in 1889 is the oldest hardware in the state that is still in operation. Its interior and exterior have not been altered.
Every November, the city holds the annual National Peanut Festival. This event is held in order to commend everyone who has been contributing to the success of the peanut industry especially the peanut growers. Traditionally, it was a three-day event but has been lengthened to ten days of fun as it draws almost 200,000 visitors yearly. The peanut growers showcase their products and entertainments abound in the forms of live bands and tons of fun activities for everyone such beauty pageants, contests, amusement rides and a whole lot more. Foods and beverages also flood during the event. It is normally held in the fairgrounds situated a few miles south of Ross Clark Circle.
Landmark Park & Alabama Agricultural Museum is a farmstead built in 1900. It houses a historic farmhouse and farm animals. A planetarium show is made available. It’s a museum and a park combined so you can have a picnic in the area. G.W. Carver Museum is a must-visit as well. It houses memorabilia about the life and works of the man who paved the way for the southern agronomic prosperity and served as a character of the link between art and science.
