The county seat of Madison County, Huntsville's is home to approximately 180,200 residents. The city holds the distinction of being the first English-speaking city in the state of Alabama, as well as its close association with the United States' space mission and in the development of space technology in the latter half of the previous century. Huntsville's association with the country's space mission was what gave it its nickname, "Rocket City." The city was named after a Revolutionary War veteran, John Hunt, who was also the first settler of the land that was later named after him.
