About Los Angeles, California

Los Angeles is the second largest city in the United States with a population of 3.7 million people. More often referred to as L.A., Los Angeles takes pride in its legendary beaches, merry mix of urban and suburban life, and cultural diversity. The call of Hollywood’s bright lights and gilded streets is yet another exciting prospect for people visiting Los Angeles, which is situated in California’s southern region. The city also has the sixth busiest airport in the world with Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) being an important gateway to and from international destinations.

Things to Do

Here is one city where travelers will never run out of things to do as there simply is too many to tickle one’s fancy. Spend a day in Malibu Beach, Venice Beach or Santa Monica Beach, some of the sandy heavens found along the 60-mile-long strip of beaches nestled on L.A.’s coastline. Hollywood tours are well worth the time for starstruck fans hoping to get a glimpse of their favorite celebrity. Families with kids in tow will better appreciate Disneyland and Universal Studios. Eating dim sum in Chinatown or visiting unique sights like the La Brea Tar Pits may also bring delightful experiences while you’re exploring the city.

There is no doubt that Rodeo Drive is a popular choice for glitzy shopping but Los Angeles has more to offer. Close by is Robertson Boulevard where chic boutiques like Madison and Lisa Kline are located. In West L.A., Third Street Shopping District has a wealth of retail options to provide a frenzied shopping experience. Souvenir shopping, on the other hand, can be done in the Original Los Angeles Farmer’s Market. For hip choices in fashion, shops in Silver Lake, Los Feliz and Echo Park feature many local designers whose creations are geared towards the young and edgy set.

Restaurants and Dining

With the various cultural traditions present in Los Angeles society, the restaurant scene is sure to be a pleasurable experience. Keep in mind that widely acclaimed establishments that you often see featured in magazines and television require reservations.  Included in the list of must-try places are Koi for sushi selections, Father’s Office for burgers and Spago for fusion cuisine. If you’re fond of weekend brunches, Pasadena’s Raymond Restaurant has a relaxed cottage atmosphere with hearty treats on its menu. Breakfasts in Marston’s, also in Pasadena, is a surefire winner in comfort foods like pancakes and omelettes.

Best Museums

Los Angeles is not all about Hollywood and beaches. The city is also home to several fine museums that would be of interest to art lovers. The Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Museum of Contemporary Art, Getty Center and Norton Simon Museum of Art serve visual feasts to visitors with their extensive collections covering various periods. Going around Los Angeles will also allow travelers to see living showcases of exquisite architecture in the city. Spanish Mission-style buildings and Art Deco structures are found in the downtown area. Join organized tours focusing on architecture around L.A. to get a deeper perspective of the city’s structural wonders.
