About Orlando, Florida

Overview

Orlando is a well-rounded tourist destination with its healthy mix of recreation and cultural offerings. The Florida city is more recognized for Walt Disney World, Universal Studios and SeaWorld, but its cultural attractions are nonetheless worthwhile stopovers while exploring the city. Aside from Mickey Mouse, Orlando is also home to a wonderful range of museums that offer a look into the heritage of the city. Not to forget Orlando’s shopping mettle, pursuits in the retail arena will prove to be challenging as there are nine shopping malls and scores of flea markets spread throughout the city.

Things to Do

You would need a week for the quintessential Orlando vacation spent inside its theme parks. The massive spread of the Walt Disney World parks along with SeaWorld, Islands of Adventure, Discovery Cove and Holy Land Experience gives families a true taste of Orlando’s itinerary for fun. Greater Orlando area has more recreational options for visitors. Winter Park is a nearby city with an annual cultural festival featuring local art and entertainment. In Downtown Orlando’s Lock Haven Park, museums such as the Orlando Museum of Art present an impressive collection of modern artworks. The city has its green urban spaces as well, with Leu Botanical Gardens offering shaded walking trails, a large rose garden and the most extensive Camellia collection outside California.

Accommodation Tips

The area covered by the Disney theme parks is a sprawling 47-square mile section of Orlando, which also has a variety of hotels, shops, restaurants, nightlife and golf resorts. For tourists, the central location of International Drive puts them near dining and accommodation options, without having to stay far from the amusement parks. The more budget-conscious travelers may opt to find a base in Kissimmee with its affordable motels and hotel chains. Downtown Orlando is well away from the tourist fray, but provides a more laid back urban ambiance for those who prefer a more relaxed environment.

When to Visit

The region of Central Florida is blessed with a subtropical climate, meaning to say, you can expect summers to be very hot and winters quite warm. Orlando’s year-round sunshine attracts visitors at any season, but do take note of the hurricane season that falls from June to November. Florida’s hurricanes are some of the fiercest weather disturbances in America, thus, it is best to avoid these months. Special events like the Epcott Food and Wine Festival during autumn and Orlando Fringe Festival during springtime are popular crowd-drawers for the city.

Best Hotel Accommodations

Orlando holidays need not be expensive, especially with several inexpensive hotel options in the city. Economy inns are found downtown so that travelers can still be conveniently near Universal Studios and SeaWorld. Mid-range choices are situated on International Drive with places like the Embassy Suites, Homewood Suites, La Quinta Inn and Wyndham. Vacationing families who can afford a luxurious treat for the kids can stay within the four-star resorts inside the Walt Disney World complex. More upscale hotels are found in South Orange Avenue, Vineland Avenue and Central Florida Parkway.
