About Las Vegas, Nevada

Overview

Las Vegas is easily recognized for its casinos, luxury hotels and headliner entertainment. The city, which lies in the middle of the Mojave Desert, welcomes visitors at an average of 35 million every year. Its neon-lit streets night after night is a far cry from its sleepy days as a backwater railroad town in the early 1900s.  The construction of the Hoover Dam in 1928 saw an exodus of workers to Las Vegas. And when gambling was legalized in Nevada in 1931, casinos and watering holes sprouted up around the city. The glitzy Las Vegas with which everyone is familiar took shape when legendary gangster Bugsy Siegel opened Flamingo Hotel in 1946, setting the standard of opulence in this fabled Nevada city.

Shopping

From designer chic to bargain outlet finds, shopping in Las Vegas is just as lively as its nightlife. The Strip is the go-to place for big-name boutiques and haute couture. The widely famous Forum Shops in Caesars Palace is also a favorite haunt for high-end stores and A-list restaurants. Offering picturesque sights for the shopper is the group of retailers inside The Grand Canal Shops at the Venetian. For those who opt to take the thrifty route, the Las Vegas Premium Outlets will not disappoint with its outlet stores of popular brands selling discounted clothes. Vintage hunters will want to check out downtown’s Antique Row for its quaint shops.

Entertainment and Nightlife

Las Vegas dons its party hats as soon as thousands and thousands of flashy lights go up and illuminate the skyline. Not everything about the city is concentrated in casinos. There’s a little something for everyone in the ‘Entertainment Capital of the World’. The hottest clubs that have earned quite a following among celebrities are mostly found within popular hotels. Keep an eye out for them at Venetian’s Tao nightclub, Rain Las Vegas inside Palms Casino Resort, Mirage Casino and Hotel’s Jet and MGM Grand’s Studio 54. Comedy clubs like Improv and Comedy Stop are perfect places to enjoy a laugh or two. More entertainment continues in Vegas, including burlesque shows, impersonator acts and Broadway type productions.

Restaurants and Dining

With such diverse range of nightlife options in Las Vegas, expect the restaurant scene to appeal to a global palate. Visitors can find indulgence in Italian cuisine or fine French culinary delights, just as commonly as down-home comforts of steaks and burgers. Golden Steer Steakhouse, the oldest one in the city, boasts past patrons like Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley. Another local favorite is Chicago Joe’s that serves hefty portions of old-fashioned Italian specialties. Other mention-worthy establishments like Florida Café Cuban Restaurant, Mr. Lucky’s and Mon Ami Gabi continue to draw locals and tourists alike for their sumptuous gustatory treats.

Best Hotel Accommodations

Hotels vying for attention combine extraordinary accommodations with endless options of entertainment. Enormous space for casinos and arenas for the occasional multi-million boxing match are typical complement to ultra-luxe hotel rooms and suites. Thus, one will notice that the best hotels in the city, such as the Venetian, Bellagio, Palms Palace, Trump Hotel, Caesars Palace and the MGM Grand, are all top venues for hamming it up in Las Vegas.
