10 Tips for Safe Travel in Dubai
A prominent tourist destination, Dubai is truly an exotic location to discover, as it shows how the innovative blend of natural beauty and advanced technology could make a city an engineering wonderland. However, because it is located in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) where appropriate decorum must be observed, there are a handful of reminders that you must keep in mind while enjoying Dubai.
Here are 10 tips to keep in mind for your safe travel to Dubai
- Get covered by health insurance. Now don’t fret because this is the first advice you get. Dubai isn’t a dangerous place at all; getting covered by health insurance while on travel must be a generic goal no matter what your dream destination may be.
- Make sure your papers are in order. Call you embassy to inquire what travel papers you need to prepare.
- Study Arab customs. Although Dubai is an open city and is less strict that other Arab towns, you should still learn what behavior is acceptable and unacceptable.
- Get an international driver’s license. If you plan in exploring Dubai on your own, you should make sure that your driver’s license covers international territories.
- Be careful in taking pictures. In Dubai, it is considered rude and disrespectful if you take pictures of people and places without asking for permission. Unless you’re in a tourist location, always ask for consent first before doing some clicking.
- Don’t drink alcohol in public. In Muslim tradition, drinking alcoholic beverages is discouraged; so public drunkenness, even among tourists, is prohibited.
- Mind your drugs. Remember that scene in “Sex and the City 2” when Samantha’s hormone drugs were confiscated? The same policy applies in Dubai; get a checklist from your embassy and see what prescription drugs are considered legal in the city.
- Lessen public smooches. In Arab culture, it’s considered offensive to be affectionate in public.
- Do money exchanges at proper venues. Always go to the bank, the hotel or the ATM to have your money converted to the local currency.
- Dress appropriately. Do not walk around in revealing clothing; never go shirtless (for men) and never wear skimpy tops and bottoms (for women).
