Lisbon is one of the oldest cities on Earth and also among the most beautiful ones. The city holds a charm that could not be matched by other cities, perhaps due its old age and the developments and creations that have accumulated over its long history. The city is notable for many architectural features, including the longest in the bridge in Europe, the Ponte Vasco da Gama. Another interesting landmark and architectural wonder in the city is the Aqueduto das Aguas Livres which also holds the distinction of being the largest stone arch worldwide. The city is also home to 2 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Belém Tower and Jerónimos Monastery.
Aside from those mentioned above, the city has a very long list of remarkable landmarks. Thus, it is really not surprising that millions of people come to this beautiful city just to see these landmarks and imagine how life had always been in this old city. The best way to learn more about the city is to visit the many museums, including the Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga. The Castelo de São Jorge (St. George's Castle) is a destination that should not be missed. This fortified citadel is set upon a hill so that tourists who set out to visit will enjoy great views of the river and the surrounding city below.
An old city should not be covered with dust and cobwebs. Well, Lisbon is definitely old but always maintains a fresh face in many areas because of the presence of parks and various open spaces. The Lisbon Botanical Garden is among the oldest and most beautiful gardens of Europe. Another great garden offering a breath of fresh air to the city is the Jardim Botanico which is also quite old, dating several hundreds of years old.
