Mong Kok has the highest population density in the world, a fact that has made it to the Guinness World Records. The mean population density is 340,000 per square mile, with an astounding development multiple of four. Thus, it is no wonder at all that at any given time, the streets of Mong Kok are teeming with people and vehicles. Traffic is very heavy on the streets, often resembling a traffic jam.
The direct translation of Mong Kok to English is “prosperous corner”. This is thought to come from the fact that back when it was a coastal region, the city had a very abundant supply of ferns. Still, it could still be applied today as the city is a booming one, with lots of shops, boutiques, malls, and various business establishments. You’ll find everything and anything that you can dream of seeing in a shopping area – items like traditional Chinese wares to the latest modern gadgets and gizmos.
There are so many markets and shopping places in Mong Kok that it is impossible to explore all of them thoroughly in a week. Still, it is a good idea to remember the places where specific items are being sold. Those interested in shopping for women’s clothing, accessories, and various stuff can visit Ladies’ Street. For songbirds and countless bird species, visit Bird Garden. It is Fa Yuen Street or Sneakers Street that you can find sneakers and shoes of every style, size, and design. Tile Street is where shoppers can find anything they need for home construction or renovation. Those in search of goldfish and various tropical fish species should take time to visit Goldfish Market while those looking for flowers and various houseplants can check out Flower Market Road.
