There are many arguments as to what the name of the city of Croydon really means, considering that there are no concrete evidence available. The town’s unique landscape right beside a valley that is crooked in form is one of the possible reasons. Still, although this snaking form is quite interesting to behold, most historians agree that the name is not derived from that fact but from the cultivation and collection of saffron in the valley. No matter what the reason behind the name really is, it is of great interest to most travelers that the town is set in such a valley.
The town of Croydon has a rich culture, music, arts, and literature. This is easily seen by the many venues for entertainment, arts, and performances in the city. Visitors will be able to enjoy the music and musical performances in any of the concert venues, bars, and radio stations of Craydon. With a thriving rock scene, Croydon is able to cater to a wide range of audience and listeners. Several art venues are also found in the city, including galleries and theaters. Popular venues are the Warehouse Theatre, Fairfield Halls, and even small community theaters.
It is said that a trip, no matter in what place or time, is never complete if the traveler does not visit at least one of the most popular landmarks of the town or place being visited. In Croydon, there are plenty of landmarks to see and visit. The Fairfield Halls complex is not just a music and entertainment venue but is also a landmark in the town. A structure sometimes has to be so amazing or unique for it to become a striking landmark, such is the case of the No.1 Croydon building. Its unique architecture earned it several nicknames, including “The Wedding Cake”, “Threepenny Bit building”, and “50p building”.
