Often confused with “Eureka”, the city’s name is actually quite far from this exclamatory word. There is actually another city with the name of Eureka in California. The city actually has a quite interesting reason for getting its name. It is said that the name actually came from “BAKERY”. A traveler came to the town which then had no name yet. Seeing a canvas left out to dry, he mistook it for the town’s name. Now, the canvass had been reversed but the “B” was not seen. The townsfolk liked the name so that they adapted it. A less mysterious reason for the name is that the word “yreka” is said to mean “white mountain” or “north mountain” in Shasta language. Still, no matter what the real score for the city’s unique name, it is an interesting place to visit.
There are actually plenty of places to enjoy the outdoors so that travelers heading to Yreka will surely have fun options to try. In fact, the city is a favorite destination for many tourists. Biking and hiking are favorite activities, especially with the mountains looming in the background. Hiking is especially a rewarding experience considering that there are plenty of lakes, streams, and waterfalls in the area where hikers can truly enjoy and appreciate the beauty of nature. Winter is a good time to visit Yreka because the slopes are simply perfect for skiing.
It would also be nice for travelers to trace the history of this city which had once been a busy mining town. In fact, the city has several parks and monuments dating back to the Gold Rush era. It would also be interesting to visit the historic downtown area, a place listed on the National Register of Historic Places./p>
