Milan is a small village in Ohio. It takes pride in having a rich culture and history even with its very small size of just 1.2 sq mi (3.0 km2). It is set in the Great Lakes area, once directly connected to the Lake Erie via the Milan Canal at the most prosperous period of its history, the Canal Era. It was also during this era that the most famous resident of the village was born, no less than inventor and businessman Thomas Alva Edison. The city continues to be proud of Edison, also capitalizing on his fame by opening the small brick home in which he was born, now converted into a museum, for the public to tour.
Milan is remarkable in that small as it is, it is packed with a lot of places to visit, interesting and historic places. Aside from the museum dedicated for Thomas Alva Edison, it is also the place where travelers can find the historic Mitchell-Turner House that dates back to 1848. There are also a lot more mansions and homes, many of which are grand and had been built during the famous Canal Era. In fact, these remarkable homes paved the way for the village to be considered a Distinctive Destination by The National Trust for Historic Preservation in 2002. With so many great landmarks to visit, this small village really is a good place to visit.
The village of Milan is really such a nice and easy place to explore. Don’t forget to check out the scenic Town Square. This is the place where one can find great architecture as well as many businesses selling local goods. There are also antique shops in the area.
