Hong Kong: A Big and Tall Little City

Hong Kong is an autonomous city and one of the 2 special administrative regions (SARs) of the People's Republic of China (PRC). This city only has a land area of 1,104 km2 equivalent to 426 sq mi but quite surprisingly, it is home to 7,650 skyscrapers and is populated by more than 7 million people. Not only is it one of the most densely populated cities in the world, it has more buildings higher than 35 m compared to other cities in the world. Thus, it might be small in area but it is a big city. In fact, it is considered to the world’s most vertical city, with more people working or living above the 14th floor than in any other place.

The East Meets the West in Hong Kong

Having been a colony of the British Empire for a very long time – even with episodes of being under Japan – Hong Kong has a culture of “East meets West”. While the rest of the people in China struggle to speak English, it is an official language in Hong Kong. It is taught in schools all over the city so that most of the city’s inhabitants are fluent in spoken and written English. Well, this is really a very important factor in Hong Kong considering that the city is one of the leading international financial centers in the world. Even its legal system is influenced by the English Common Law tradition established under British rule instead of following the civil law system of China.

Visiting Hong Kong

Hong Kong is a very interesting place to visit. What it lacks in the natural views portion it compensates with numerous man-made attractions. Hong Kong Disneyland Resort is one of the favorite destinations set on Lantau Island in Hong Kong. There are also plenty of street markets and shopping malls in the city. Also, employing the “East meets West” principle, the cuisine of Hong Kong varies from street foods and dim sum to fast foods to haute cuisine.

not a native but a local

I think it is safe to say that I am not exactly a native of Hong Kong, but I have been living here for approximately 5 years now, and I must say that it is a place you can easily fall in love with. If you are here for the first time, I suggest that you check out Victoria Harbour. Although it is technically a marina, but you can enjoy breathtaking views in the area, have a great time shopping, and just relax. There is also this activity or event called “Dialogue in the Dark Hong Kong” which is like an exhibition but is performed in total darkness. It’s a unique experience that has caught the attention of numerous tourists and locals as well.
