Spokane, Home of the Children of the Sun

Spokane is known as the largest city that is found in Spokane County, as is also known for being the county’s county seat. It is set on Spokane River and is also officially called as The Lilac City because of the lilacs that had blossomed and flourished in the area since their introduction in the early 20th century. It is also known as the birthplace of Father’s Day as it was Sonora Smart Dodd, a Spokane woman, who proposed the celebration back in 1910. Spokane is named after the Spokane Native American tribe whose name means “Children of the Sun” in Salish.

Enjoying the Outdoors in Spokane

Spokane is one of the most modern cities in the US, yet travelers and residents can find lots of activities to enjoy the outdoors within the boundaries of the city. Truly, Spokane is a diverse place to visit and have fun. In fact, the city is recognized for being one of the leaders among the cities in the West to develop a city-wide park system. This is something that has been achieved even before World War I. Some of the most beautiful parks in Spokane include Riverside State Park, Riverfront Park, Mount Spokane State Park, John A. Finch Arboretum, and Manito Park and Botanical Gardens.

What to Do in Spokane

Those visiting Spokane would probably not run out of places to visit and activities to do. One of the most favorite things to do in Spokane is exploring the downtown area, with its wide array of shops, boutiques, malls, retail centers, and restaurants. It is also fun to explore the outdoors, beginning with a day tour to Spokane Falls where visitors can ride a gondola which will bring them across the river gorge up across the falls. The Riverfront Park is not just a great outdoor destination but also plays host to many of the largest events in the city.

Interesting place!

I have travelled far and wide over the past few years, but I must say that none have made me feel so comfortable so far. Aside from the comfort, it was a pleasure to enjoy white water activities – these were the things that I was not able to enjoy before. Many people do flock to Spokane River to enjoy, but my guess this is just a testament of how fun it is. If you enjoy good food and exciting flavors, then you must try out all the gastronomic offerings that Spokane has. If you LOVE steak as much as I do, you MUST try out Churchill’s Steak House. It’s the finest steak I have tried so far in the area. If you fancy a little Latin cuisine, then you might want to check out Agave Latin Bistro. Its open around 4 in the afternoon towards midnight.
