Whatever the time of the year is, Boston is always filled with festivals and community events. It is highly recommended to come during these times when the city soaks on double the excitement and fun.
Here are some of the top Boston festivals to enjoy.
The very fact that Boston was the first in North America to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in 1737 makes it enough reason to spend St. Patrick’s Day in the city. During this eventful day on the third week of March, locals including business take part in the festivities which usually begin with a St. Patrick's Day Parade, attracting over 500,000 people each year. With its considerable population with Irish roots, expect lots of Irish-style merriment and fun activities, Irish music, Irish-inspired dishes and heavy drinking.
Boston has the best Fourth of July celebrations in the country because they celebrate it Boston-style with the famous Harborfest. Harberfest is a week-long Independence Day celebration, beginning June 30 until July 5, which features over 200 events from concerts to Revolutionary era reenactments, tours, children’s activities and other performances. During this time, the Boston Pops also performs a free two-day concert on the banks of the Charles River. The highlight of Harborfest is the July 4th fireworks display that light up Boston Harbor. The city of Boston has one of the best fireworks show in the U.S. the show normally begins around 10 p.m. and lasts for about 30 minutes.
First Night, an outdoor celebration in Boston on New Year’s Eve, has been a tradition in the city since 1976. This three-day long festival, which begins from December 31 to January 2, is in celebration of the art community in Boston. The festivity is an alcohol-free revelry filled with music, food, performances fireworks, culture, ice sculptures and art.
Just like any place in the world, Boston too, lights up and becomes alive during Christmas. Around this time, the trees in the city including Faneuil Hall, Boston Common and the shopping centers glitter with tiny lights and flash with attractive ornaments. Newbury Street also becomes thick with shoppers with lots of food, music and activities for the Newbury Street Holiday Stroll.
The annual Boston Arts Festival was created to promote visual and performing artist in the city. It is held in the Christopher Columbus Waterfront Park annually, and is visited by more than 50,000 visitors. Spectators can personally meet and greet the artists and craftsmen, and view their works from handicrafts to jewelries, paintings, sculpture, photography, ceramics and other art pieces.
Other celebrations in Boston include the two-day CollegeFest in the Hynes Convention Center that is attended by nearly 15,000 students, and the North End Feasts, Italian summer feasts in North End celebrated with great Italian food and music in honor of Catholic saints.
