The city of Worcester in Massachusetts bears a heart in its official symbol and flag. It’s not that the city is the city of love and romance – that is Paris. The reason for the heart is that the city is The Heart of the Commonwealth, so that having the heart in the seal is actually reasonable. The city is also known by other nicknames, including “Wormtown”, “Woo-town”, “The Woo”, and “The City of the Seven Hills”.
Worcester is named after Worcester, England. Its long history traces back to 1673 when it was first settled by English people, presumably from Worcester, England. It was first named as Quinsigamond but was later changed to Worcester in 1684, in the same year that it was incorporated. This city is quite strong in that although it had once been vulnerable to various attacks by the hostile native population, it was resettled several times. When it did gain its peace, it was considered its own region for centuries until the modern day encroachment of Boston's suburbs. Still, in itself, the city is known for having a strong economy, industry, commerce, and education.
Thousands of tourists and travelers visit Worcester every year, even though tourism is not a major contributing factor to its economy. It is home to several universities and colleges, becoming a haven for students seeking quality higher education. The city of Worcester is also home to various landmarks and attractions, offering travelers destinations such as the Worcester Art Museum, EcoTarium (a science museum), Higgins Armory Museum, and many others. The city also holds several festivals, including the famous Worcester Music Festival which holds the distinction of being the oldest music festival in the United States. Other annual festivals include the Asian Festival of Worcester, stART on the Street, and Worcester County St. Patrick's Parade which is one of the largest parades in Massachusetts.
